When to Take Antibiotics

Many people think antibiotics can cure any sickness, but this is not true. Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections. They do not work for common cold, catarrh, or flu because those are caused by viruses. Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them can cause problems. Your body may stop responding to the medicine, and the infection may become harder to treat in the future. This is called antibiotic resistance.

Doctors prescribe antibiotics only when they are sure a bacteria is causing the illness. Examples include some ear infections, pneumonia, and skin infections. When the medicine is used the right way, it kills the bacteria and helps you feel better faster. But when used wrongly, it can cause side effects like stomach upset, rashes, diarrhea, or yeast infections. Understanding when antibiotics are needed is the best way to use them safely.

In Nigeria, many people buy antibiotics from pharmacies or chemists without proper guidance. This makes misuse very common. Some stop taking the medicine too early when they start feeling better. Others use leftover antibiotics or share them with family members. These habits are dangerous. Every antibiotic should be taken exactly as prescribed and for the full number of days.

When antibiotics are needed:

  • Confirmed bacterial infection

  • Severe symptoms that do not improve

  • Infections like pneumonia or bacterial tonsillitis

When antibiotics are not needed:

  • Flu, common cold, cough from viruses

  • Most sore throats

  • Watery diarrhea

Safe Antibiotic Use

Always complete your dose even when you feel better. Never share your antibiotics or use someone else’s prescription. Before buying antibiotics, speak with a pharmacist or doctor. Using these medicines the right way helps them stay effective and protects your health in the long run.
