How it works
Letrozole belongs to a class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors. It blocks an enzyme called aromatase, which the body uses to make estrogen.
- Less aromatase → less estrogen produced
- Lower estrogen levels can slow or stop the growth of some hormone-sensitive breast cancers.
- In fertility treatment, the temporary drop in estrogen causes the brain to release more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which can stimulate ovulation.
Common uses
- Treatment of certain types of breast cancer after menopause.
- Fertility treatment to induce ovulation in women who are not ovulating regularly, such as some women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
