How it works

Ephedrine increases blood pressure by stimulating the sympathetic (“fight-or-flight”) nervous system in two ways:

• Directly stimulates alpha (α) and beta (β) adrenergic receptors.
• Indirectly causes nerve endings to release norepinephrine, a natural chemical that increases blood pressure and heart activity.
