Zymthrotec works because it combines two medicines that do different jobs:
- Diclofenac – relieves pain and inflammation
- Diclofenac is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug).
- It blocks enzymes called COX-1 and COX-2, which the body uses to produce prostaglandins.
- Prostaglandins contribute to pain, swelling, inflammation, and fever. By reducing their production, diclofenac helps:
- Reduce pain
- Decrease swelling and stiffness
- Improve movement in conditions such as arthritis
- Misoprostol – protects the stomach
- While diclofenac reduces pain, it can also lower the prostaglandins that normally protect the stomach lining.
- Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin (a prostaglandin E1 analogue). It:
- Increases the production of protective mucus and bicarbonate in the stomach
- Improves blood flow to the stomach lining
- Reduces stomach acid secretion
- These effects help lower the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding that can occur with long-term NSAID use.
