Zymthrotec works because it combines two medicines that do different jobs:

1. Diclofenac – relieves pain and inflammation
   • Diclofenac is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug).
   • It blocks enzymes called COX-1 and COX-2, which the body uses to produce prostaglandins.
   • Prostaglandins contribute to pain, swelling, inflammation, and fever. By reducing their production, diclofenac helps:
     • Reduce pain
     • Decrease swelling and stiffness
     • Improve movement in conditions such as arthritis
2. Misoprostol – protects the stomach
   • While diclofenac reduces pain, it can also lower the prostaglandins that normally protect the stomach lining.
   • Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin (a prostaglandin E1 analogue). It:
     • Increases the production of protective mucus and bicarbonate in the stomach
     • Improves blood flow to the stomach lining
     • Reduces stomach acid secretion
   • These effects help lower the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding that can occur with long-term NSAID use.
