  • Name: Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid)
  • How It Works: It is a combination antibiotic. Amoxicillin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Clavulanic Acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor) prevents certain bacteria from producing enzymes that destroy amoxicillin. This combination allows the antibiotic to kill bacteria that would otherwise be resistant to it.
  • Form: Oral Suspension (Syrup).
  • Warning:
    • This is a prescription-only medication; do not use without a doctor’s diagnosis.
    • Allergy: Do not use if you have a known history of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillin, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
    • Complete the Course: You must finish the entire prescribed course even if you feel better to prevent antibiotic resistance.
    • Side Effects: May cause diarrhea, nausea, or thrush. If you develop a severe skin rash or watery/bloody diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately.
    • Storage: Once the suspension is mixed with water, it must be stored in a refrigerator and discarded after 7 to 10 days (as specified on the bottle).
