- Name: Mycostatin (Nystatin)
- How It Works: Mycostatin is a polyene antifungal medication. It works by binding to ergosterol, a key substance in the fungal cell membrane. This action makes holes in the membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out and the fungus to die.
- Form: Oral Suspension (liquid/drops).
- Warning:
- Do not stop taking the medicine early, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cleared.
- For the oral suspension, place half the dose on each side of the mouth and swish/hold in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing to ensure contact with the infected areas.
- Side effects are usually mild (diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain) but stop use immediately and seek medical attention if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling of the face/throat, difficulty breathing).
