Here’s how it works:

1. It enters the malaria-infected red blood cells.
   The malaria parasite digests hemoglobin inside red blood cells, producing iron-containing compounds (heme).
2. It is activated by iron.
   Artesunate is converted to its active form, dihydroartemisinin (DHA). Contact with iron from the parasite activates the drug.
